Paper submission:
For special sessions there two possible types of papers: extended abstracts and full papers.
Both are valid for presenting a paper and for being included in the electronic proceedings.
In case of extended abstracts, a second submission after the conference is needed to be selected for publication in the Lecture Notes publication.
The length of extended abstracts is of 3 pages, including 5 sections:
1. Scientific background
2. Material and methods
3. Results
4. Conclusion
5. Few references (no more than 10)

1. "Data integration and analysis in Omic-Science"

*Session scope:*
High-throughput data are growing massively and entering as routinely tools in biomedical research. However new methods are still needed to analyze and integrate the massive data sets, to extract knowledge and biological information and/or to reveal, confirm or confute biological and clinical hypotheses.
Aim of this special session is to bring together researchers from the international scientific community interested in this field, to meet participants to Italian Flagship Project InterOmics to discuss the state of the art, the advancements and the future perspectives in bioinformatics and biostatistics for omic-science.

2. "Knowledge Based Medicine"

*Session Scope:*
Currently, there is a paradigm shift in clinical practice from Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) to Knowledge-Based Medicine (KBM). In EBM, the results of population-based research are used to guide clinical decision making. EBM concepts, like hierarchy of evidence, meta-analyses, confidence intervals, and study design, offer a stronger decision support than physicians’ experience alone.
Building on the EBM foundation, the newly emerging KBM goes beyond evidence and develops intelligent clinical decision support systems (i-CDSS), which can be integrated in clinical workflow. These are developed mainly by knowledge discovery techniques, data mining, and text mining, using computational intelligence and machine learning methods. Thus, population-based medicine shifts to personalized and predictive medicine.

This special session aims to bring together researchers from different backgrounds and domains, providing a casual venue for the discussion of current developments and applications, potentially leading to a computational intelligence foundation for Knowledge-Based Medicine.

3. " Heterogeneous Computing for Bioinformatics "

*Session scope:*
Many different innovative techniques have been deployed during the latest years to improve the total throughput of HPC systems for Bioinformatics. Different approaches are by the way relying on different technological backgrounds, and often being not contaminated one to each other. Most notably the approaches based upon massive computing (clusters), GPUs, FPGAs and ASICs offer to developers many different ways to solve the same problems, each one offering peculiar outcomes and characteristic drawbacks.
Main aim of this session is to cross-fertilize the field of heterogeneous HPC, by promoting mutual collaboration of computer scientists, biologists, numerical analysts, and digital designers, and thus providing a better overview of inter-disciplinary techniques for solving challenging -omic problems.
